LICENSED TO DRIVE

When you relocate and settle in a new country there is always a long list of things to do, things to change and things to get used to. For many people, one of the biggest of these is driving - adapting to the road rules and customs. But before you can take the wheel you should be absolutely certain you're licensed to drive.

Anyone living in Spain who has a driving licence issued by an EU country may simply keep on using that licence for as long as it's valid. However you may exchange it for a Spanish one if you choose (a fairly simple process), and you have to exchange it if you commit a driving offence.
It gets more complicated for someone with a driving licence issued by a country outside the EU. Some countries have agreements with Spain allowing you to exchange your licence (as long as you do so within the first year of residence). But if your licence was not issued by one of these countries you'll have to take a full driving test - in Spanish!
